一项研究发现，在对政治电台谈话节目的分析、学生对教授的评价以及各有将近200名受试者参与的多个实验中，平均起来，人们用姓氏称呼男性专业人士的可能性是用姓氏称呼女性专业人士的2倍以上；在各有500到900人参加的另外的几项试验中，用姓氏加以称呼的科学家被受试者判断为比用全名称呼的科学家更知名、更杰出，而且值得获得一份职业奖励。
