NASA sees Silver Dollar Fire in Washington State

image: NASA's Terra satellite spotted the Silver Dollar fire just one day after it began on July 02, 2017. This image, from July 3rd, 2017 shows that the fire has already burned a large area (23,335 acres) and is burning in Yakima and Benton counties. The cause of the fire is unknown at present and mostly grass and brush are fueling this fire. Fire officials warn that with high temperatures and low relative humidity forecasted, new fire starts have the potential to grow rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior. Caution is being advised in and around this area especially during the 4th of July holiday time. NASA's Terra satellite collected this natural-color image with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, MODIS, instrument on July 03, 2017. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. view more
