为了检验情景记忆在未来想象和创造性思维中的作用，科研人员使用经颅磁刺激（TMS）这种非侵入式的方法干扰了大脑的涉及了情景记忆的海马区的神经活动；对年龄在19到26岁的18名受试者的分析表明，在靶向经颅磁刺激（TMS）之后，想象未来的事件的时候，个体几乎没有产生细节，并且几乎没有产生创造性观点，而未来想象和创造性思维的衰退与海马区活动的减少有关联。
