在2016年到2018年间,科研人员使用无人机和卫星照片勘察了塞内加尔河下游流域的32个地点的淡水螺的栖息地,该区域流行血吸虫病,然后对该区域的1287名儿童进行了血吸虫病的筛查,结果发现接触水的地点的面积以及被非新生植被覆盖的面积这充当了螺的栖息地是比宿主螺计数更强的人类感染预测指标;这组作者还发现,在有螺栖息地的人类水接触地点的血吸虫病传播风险比在其他地点更高,这提示清除非新生植被可能有益于螺控制举措。
