一项关于南极横贯山脉原产的6个微节肢动物物种的研究发现了其中3个物种的种群曾经在遗传上相互隔离达至少352万年、另外3个物种的种群隔离了不到200万年的遗传证据；这些结果提示，分离的时间线对应于西南极冰原的大尺度变化，这会影响到这些节肢动物扩散和与其他种群结合的能力。
