Fires in Northwest Territories, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada

image: More smoke covers western Canada. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Aqua satellite captured this image of the fires near the Great Slave Lake on June 26, 2011 20:20 UTC (4:20 p.m. EDT). The fires (indicated by areas of red) that MODIS picked up appear to be burning near the Colin Cornwall National Wildland that borders Alberta and Saskatchewan. The government of Saskatchewan reported 19 fires in the province, and Alberta’s Sustainable Resource Development agency reported 22 active fires. Smoke from wildfires in northern Alberta have now covered the city of Edmonton. The smoke is from the large Richardson fire burning north of Fort McMurray now considered the largest fire in Alberta’s history, according to French Tribune. view more
