Grant and Award Announcement

Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS®), the leading professional association for analytics professionals, today announced 12 new recipients of the annual INFORMS Fellow Award.

The INFORMS Fellow Award, which brings together the very best operations researchers and analytics experts throughout the world, recognizes outstanding achievement in five areas:

  1. education in the field of operations research/management science
  2. management of operations research/management science, including responsibility for applying the profession's techniques within an organization of any type
  3. the practice of operations research/management science/analytics
  4. research
  5. service to INFORMS and the profession

The 2013 Fellows are:

  1. Daniel Bienstock , Columbia University, for his fundamental contributions to the methodology of modeling and solving difficult optimization problems, like securing electric power-grid safety, shaping the contours of an ore‐mine over time, or fighting certain epidemics.
  2. Michael W. Carter, University of Toronto, for being a pioneer in the application of the methodologies of operations research and management science to the healthcare sector, and for his contributions to this field, including improved service delivery, reduced costs, and increased efficiency.
  3. Morris A. Cohen, University of Pennsylvania, for outstanding and important contributions to the development of the field of operations management and for his impact on operations management practice.
  4. Zvi Drezner , California State University Fullerton, for seminal contributions to location theory and mathematical analysis in operations research.
  5. T.C. Hu, University of California San Diego, for his fundamental research on the borders of operations research and computer science, including network flows, integer programming, shortest paths, binary trees, and for his authoritative books on these topics.
  6. Sheldon H. Jacobson, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for an eclectic portfolio of research contributions in the areas of simulation, stochastic modeling, and discrete optimization, which have impacted numerous areas of society, including aviation security operations and public health policy.
  7. Patrick Jaillet , MIT, for opening the field of a priori optimization for stochastic programming and for being regarded as the world leader in the field of probabilistic and online optimization.
  8. Jon Lee , University of Michigan, for theoretical research, algorithm development, and solution of industrial problems involving discrete and mixed-integer nonlinear optimization.
  9. Anna_Nagurney, University of Massachusetts Amherst, for her distinguished leadership as an operations research educator and ambassador, through her extensive contributions to the concepts and properties of transportation, and supply chain networks.
  10. Sheldon M. Ross, University of California Berkeley, for fundamental research in dynamic programming, reliability, queuing, simulation, and other areas of applied probability, and for his many inspiring textbooks.
  11. Martin Savelsbergh , University of New Castle Australia, for his lifetime contributions to the theory of integer programming and the advancement of algorithms for solving practical, real-world problems in vehicle routing and scheduling, fleet management, and network design.
  12. David B. Shmoys, Cornell University, for his landmark achievements in the design of approximation algorithms for discrete and stochastic optimization problems, and for his exemplary contributions to education.

A complete list of INFORMS Fellows Awards presented since the award began in 2002 is here.

The INFORMS Fellows Awards were presented earlier this week at a luncheon at the 2013 INFORMS annual meeting in Minneapolis . Over 4,000 academics and professionals attended the conference.

About INFORMS

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS®) is the leading professional society made up of the foremost minds in the world of analytics. More than 10,000 members worldwide, including Nobel Prize laureates, turn to INFORMS to provide leading industry best practices, training and events focused on data analytics and operations research. Members of INFORMS work in business, government and academia and represent fields as diverse as airlines, health care, law enforcement, the military, financial services, retail, engineering and telecommunications. The Society serves the scientific and professional needs of operations research analysts, experts in "big data" and analytics, consultants, scientists, students, educators and managers, as well as their institutions. It publishes a variety of journals, hosts conferences, extends certification in analytics (CAP), offers continuing education courses, and provides its members with a large choice of special interest groups and local chapters.
