Stevens team takes 1st in RIT IEEE '10 design contest

Electrical & Computer Engineering students at Stevens Institute of Technology made headlines last week as they took home first place, and an $8,000 prize, at the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) IEEE Student Design Contest 10 for presenting the hardware aspects of their Digital Triage Assistant (DTA) senior design project.

The DTA team is a multi-disciplinary grouping of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering seniors at Stevens. RIT IEEE focused on the Electrical and Computer Engineering aspect of their work which included theoretical design; appropriate design simulations; working applications; a poster and multi-media presentation of the project. ECE students included: Cameron Abt; Glenn Shevach; Peter Backeris; and Szymon Butryn.

RIT IEEE '10 was highly competitive and featured outstanding design teams from other Universities including: Rochester Institute of Technology; Royal Military College of Canada; Queen's University; University of Toronto; Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art; University of Massachusetts Dartmouth; State University of New York at Stony Brook/Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and University of Massachusetts Amherst.

According to the official contest website, "Projects are evaluated by judges experienced in the field of engineering and six awards are given based on specific criteria. Held on the second Saturday of May, the contest includes breakfast, lunch, a social hour and a banquet dinner with guest speakers. The student design contest is a great way to obtain feedback from industry professionals as well as gain promotion of your design project and connectivity to other engineers."

Achieving first place in the RIT IEEE is another acknowledgment in the long line of distinctions for this remarkable senior design team, who also remain finalists in the Center for Integration of Medicine & Innovative Technology (CIMIT) prize competition.

About the Digital Triage Assistant Multi-Disciplinary Team

The DTA is a system designed to streamline the triage process in hospital emergency departments comprising of a mobile automated vital sign recorder, a backend database, and administrative software. The team combines expertise from Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering seniors at Stevens Institute of Technology.

The full DTA team: Cameron Abt; Glenn Shevach; Pete Backeris; Szymon Butryn; Raza Husain; Vaida Jakimaviciute; Malika Bhargava; Rosemary Garofalo; and Leticia Ennist, is advised by Professors Vikki Hazelwood, working with the BME students, and Bruce McNair, working with the ECE students. Their clinical advisor is Dr. Robin Stutman, a sub-specialist who works in ER's and helped identify an unmet need in the hospital triage process.

Primarily intended to benefit hospitals and emergency clinics, this research also has the potential to provide key advancements to existing ambulance technology, military or disaster situations and even to athletic events such as marathons, where volunteer medical tents are subject to extremely high volumes.
