The number of discharge gauges continuously increased up until 1980 in the Global Runoff Data Centre's archive and started a steady decline right around the time when climate change awareness started to rise. The real decline of the monitoring network is probably less severe, but remains largely unknown due to the long delay between the time of the observation and the reported data finding its way to the GRDC archive.
