在各有超过100名成年受试者参与的多项实验中，受试者玩一个模拟了公民与难民关系的游戏，与公民向难民提供帮助没有成本的情况相比，当公民这样做会产生成本的时候，公民向难民提供的帮助就更少；这组作者说，公民愿意付出的成本随着公民的亲社会倾向程度以及难民融入的需求和努力的增加而增加。
