The Image of a Molecule, Resolved (1 of 2)

image: This is a 3D rendered view of the "anatomy" of a pentacene molecule. By using an atomically sharp metal tip terminated with a carbon monoxide molecule, IBM scientists were able to measure in the short-range regime of forces which allowed them to obtain an image of the inner structure of the molecule. The colored surface represents experimental data. The model below shows the position of the atoms within the molecule. This image relates to an article that appeared in the August 28, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. L. Gross at IBM Research, Zurich Research Laboratory in Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and colleagues, was titled, "The Chemical Structure of a Molecule Resolved by Atomic Force Microscopy.” view more
