科研人员报告说，根据对40名西方和40名东亚观察者的一项分析，对痛苦和性高潮的面部表情心理表现是不同的；痛苦的心理表现在西方和东亚观察者中间类似，而对性高潮的表现有文化特异性元素，这提示面部表情充当了一种交流作用，而文化塑造了对这些表情的表现。
