Pudukotai Dinakarrao studying malware detection in IoT networked devices

Sai Manoj Pudukotai Dinakarrao, Assistant Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, received funding from the Virginia Research Investment Fund for the project: "Lightweight Resource- and Workload-aware Malware Detection in IoT Networked Devices."

In this project, Pudukotai Dinakarrao will consider the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) testbed with multiple IoT devices and try to emulate or simulate the tasks to detect the malware in the IoT network. For the purposes of their work, the researchers are assuming that the edge IoT devices are equipped with low-end processors to perform such computations, which is also the case in CCI testbed.

The researchers will complete two tasks for this project: reliable feature extraction for malware detection and resource-aware distributed malware detection.

This project will allow the researchers to contribute to the IoT community and Virginia CCI Initiative by developing a principled approach for defending networked IoT devices from malware epidemics. The results of this project will help secure IoT networks of the future from hackers while maintaining the networks' quality of service.

Pudukotai Dinakarrao received $49,624 for this project. Funding began in June 2021 and will end in late May 2022.
