Butts Fire in Northern California

image: The Butts Fire in Northern California began on July 1, 2014 about three miles north of Pope Valley, Calif. Currently the fire has burned 3,200 acres and it 30 percent contained. This is mainly a brush and grass fire. Five structures have already been destroyed by the fire and 280 other structures are threatened. Evacuations are in effect. There are 406 fire personnel working this situation.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on July 1, 2014. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. view more
