Colorful New Era of Calcium Imaging (2 of 3)

video: Movie of time-lapse imaging of a cultured rat hippocampal neurone expressing the red fluorescent calcium ion indicator, R-GECO1. Fluctuations in calcium ion concentration, seen as transient change in fluoresence intensity (revealed in pseudo-color mode), reflect the electrical activity (action potentials) of the neurone. The amplitude of calcium transients increase during bursts of neuronal activity triggered by the addition of pharmacological agents (e.g. "0Mg/gly" or "Bic"). Time in min:sec. This video relates to an article that appeared in the Sept. 8, 2011, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Y. Zhao of University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and colleagues was titled, "An Expanded Palette of Genetically Encoded Ca2+ Indicators." view more
