Creeping, Crawling Caterpillars

video: It's likely one day there will be robots crawling around that look a lot like caterpillars. Tufts biology professor Barry Trimmer is studying the neuromechanics of caterpillars with National Science Foundation funding. It involves studying caterpillars crawling on very high tech force beam systems to study their climbing behavior, motion tracking, muscle physiology -- applications include the development of soft-bodied robots for use in medicine, environmental safety, industry and defense. view more
