Ethnic antagonism and antidemocratic attitudes

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

In a January 2020 survey of 1,151 US-based individuals who identified as Republicans or Republican-leaning Independents, a majority agreed that the traditional American way of life is disappearing rapidly and may need to be saved forcefully; the strongest predictor of these as well as other antidemocratic sentiments was ethnic antagonism, which was measured by beliefs that African Americans, Latinos, and immigrants have more than a fair share of political power and access to government resources and by concerns about discrimination against Whites, according to the authors.
