Researchers report a transcription factor, NGA1, in Arabidopsis thaliana that accumulates under dehydration stress and activates the NCED3 gene, which in turn produces an enzyme used in the biosynthesis of abscisic acid (ABA), a plant hormone that promotes protective responses to drought and is degraded under non-drought conditions, suggesting that the transcription factor plays a role in early drought stress to upregulate ABA accumulation.
