在有39名学术、产业和政府专家做出评估的一项研究中，多数回应者估计，质子交换膜燃料电池的成本在2020年无法满足美国能源部的2020年目标，但是那个最终的成本和性能目标可能在2050年达到；专家进一步识别出了催化剂金属的成本是降低成本的一个重大障碍，并且把资助催化剂和电极的研发作为优先事项。
