NASA Satellite Sees Fires in Uganda

image: Widespread agricultural burning is occurring in central and western Uganda. Smoke and fires were detected by NASA's Aqua satellite. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of fires and smoke occurring in Uganda on January 31, 2012 at 1135 UTC (6:35 a.m. EST). The fires are marked in red and smoke is light brown in color. Clouds appear in white. Uganda is bordered on the east by Kenya and there were only a few fires detected in the country's western side. To the north lies Sudan, where just a few agricultural fires were spotted by MODIS. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which lies to the west of Uganda, there were a number of fires detected. Situated to Uganda's southwest is Rwanda, and to the south is Tanzania - both of which are not visible in this MODIS image. Lake Victoria in southern Uganda is visible in this image. The lake is also shared by Kenya and Tanzania. view more
