To Gauge Distance, Jumping Spiders See Green (4 of 7)

video: This movie file shows the jumps of three jumping spiders whose forward-facing eyes were all occluded, except for one principal eye. The spiders made accurate jumps without any motion that could generate motion parallax. This clearly indicates that the spiders accurately measure the distance without any of depth perception mechanisms known in animals. This video relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 27, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by T. Nagata at Osaka City University in Osaka, Japan, and colleagues, was titled, “Depth Perception from Image Defocus in a Jumping Spider.” view more
