对 普通鹱（Puffinus puffinus）的700多次觅食之旅的GPS追踪数据的分析提示，由于这些鸟选择了它们回程的时机并且倾向于走地理上最直接的道路回家，但是没有预期到它们没有飞过的中间的岛屿或半岛的存在，这种海鸟的大脑准确编码了它们的居住地的方向和距离，但是没有编码具体路径。
