一项研究发现，受到飓风Irma和Maria影响的两个蜥蜴种群向之后的世代传下去了大的、抓握力强的趾垫；在沙氏变色蜥 (Anolis sagrei)的12个岛屿种群以及来自新热带的188个安乐蜥物种当中，频繁遭遇飓风的种群和物种比那些遇到飓风更少的物种有更大的趾垫，这提示飓风在地理和种系发生的尺度上影响蜥蜴的进化。
