video: The time-lapse movie depicts human neutrophils releasing large web-like structures called neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) (red) in response to cholesterol crystals (green) over the course of several hours. The release of NETs promotes inflammation and atherosclerotic plaque buildup in response to microscopic cholesterol crystals present in the blood and arteries. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the July 17, 2015, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Annika Warnatsch at the Francis Crick Institute in London, UK, and colleagues was titled, "Neutrophil extracellular traps license macrophages for cytokine production in atherosclerosis." view more
