A novel persulfide detection method reveals protein persulfide- and polysulfide-reducing...(1 of 2)

image: The path towards understanding H2S signaling: H2S signaling is emerging as a fundamental regulatory mechanism of cellular functions. Increasing number of reports provide evidence that--on the molecular level--H2S signals through generation of persulfide groups on functional or regulatory protein Cys residues (SIGNAL ON). The authors of this article discovered enzymatic systems that are responsible for regeneration of protein Cys thiols from persulfides, which is a necessary step for H2S signaling that has yet remained unknown (Figure 1 SIGNAL OFF). This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 22, 2016, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by É. Dóka at National Institute of Oncology in Budapest, Hungary, and colleagues was titled, 'A novel persulfide detection method reveals protein persulfide- and polysulfide-reducing functions of thioredoxin and glutathione systems.' view more
