在关于枣椰（Phoenix dactylifera L.）在北非起源的一项研究中，科研人员对71个枣椰栽培种以及属于刺葵属的5个野生亲缘物种的基因组重新测序，结果发现北非的枣椰具有与野生亲缘物种P. theophrasti杂交的混合祖先来源，后者是在克里特岛发现的一种棕榈；这组作者说，大约18%的枣椰基因组可以追溯到P. theophrasti。
