With the global challenges that face mankind and the environment, there is a growing sense among leaders in science, public policy, business and education that new, more integrative approaches to science are needed. In turn, these interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to solving problems at the frontiers of science demand responses and reforms at the institutional level.
Integrated Science − New Approaches to Education, a "virtual roundtable" on the topic of integrative science, presents discussions addressing the pluralistic nature of approaches to recasting science research and education. The "participants" come from different perspectives and experiences. They include Nobel laureates, university presidents, serious scholars and distinguished scientists, among them former Vice President Al Gore, Elias A. Zerhouni, former Director of the National Institutes of Health and Bruce Alberts, former President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Although their comments, talks, articles and interviews on this subject may have taken place at different times and in widely different venues, they have been organized into a coherent ensemble of conversations about the necessity, promises, challenges and implementation of integrative approaches to scientific research and education. Integrated Science will be helpful to a wide range of professionals facing the exciting, if daunting, hurdles involved in integrative reform.
All three editors, Michael Brint, David Marcey and Michael Shaw are on the faculty at California Lutheran University. Michael Brint is the Uyeno-Tseng Professor of International Studies and Professor of Political Science, David J. Marcey is the Fletcher Jones Professor of Developmental Biology and Michael C. Shaw is Professor of Bioengineering and Physics and Director of the Center for Integrated Science and Bioengineering.
