This updated Software Capability Maturity Model will be based on the groundbreaking and widely respected work done at Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute (SEI) since 1987. While the initial work on the SW-CMM was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the new work will by sponsored by the university, through its Institute for Software Research International (ISRI) within the School of Computer Science (SCS).
Carnegie Mellon Provost Mark Kamlet said "We are pleased to be taking this significant step to demonstrate the university's commitment to support the Software Capability Maturity Model user community, especially IT and commercial software organizations. It is our belief that Carnegie Mellon's support for continued availability of both the updated Software CMM through ISRI and the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) through the SEI will help to support quality and continuous improvement efforts for a broad and diverse global user community."
The model update project staff includes authors of the original CMM document, published in 1991, as well as other experts who helped to implement the standards. Among them are Mark Paulk, Bill Curtis, Charlie Weber, Bill Hefley and Jeff Perdue. An advisory board of software experts will be formed to guide the work, and multiple public review and comment periods will occur before the update is released. Planning for this update has already begun with development starting in November and the conclusion expected sometime in 2003.
