More Detailed Picture of Southern California Crust

video: This video shows an earthquake simulation in southern California for a magnitude 5.1 earthquake near the San Andreas fault. Seismologists compared the recordings of seismic waves at specific stations with predictions from such simulations. By analyzing the differences between seismograms, they were able to obtain a better image of the three-dimensional structure of southern California. This video relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 21, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Carl Tape of California Institute of Technology and colleagues, was titled, "Adjoint Tomography of the Southern California Crust." view more
