对澳大利亚的13个小规模有机花园的一项研究发现，城市农业运营能带来高产量，但是不具有成本效益；使用在2015年11月到2017年5月收集的园艺记录册和园艺者调查数据，这组作者发现城市花园的产量大约是澳大利亚商业农场的两倍，但是产出1公斤产品的材料和劳动力成本高于在当地商店购买同样的1公斤产品的成本。
