Researchers report a process of coral skeleton formation, in which particles that contribute to the calcium carbonate skeleton are formed within coral tissue rather than precipitated from the surrounding water as previously assumed; the findings might have implications for understanding coral resilience to ocean acidification and improving coral-based paleoclimate reconstructions.
