The main goal of launching this full cycle scientific and technological project is to create a pilot production of protein components in Russia. These components are essential for powdered dairy products that are needed for the nutrition of newborns and toddlers up to 6 months. Today the production of the special milk whey, which is a basis for the formula, is not fully possible in Russia. That’s why most of the products are coming from abroad. The new project will reduce the dependence of Russian formula producers on the import of necessary ingredients.

The project was developed for almost three years. It was evaluated by many departments and bodies of Russian federal authority and then was approved on 20 July 2021. It is the first integrated project in Russia that is fully approved by the government.

“It is a great pleasure to know that the first integrated project, approved by the Government of the Russian Federation, is based on implementing high technologies in agriculture and dairy industry. The result of this complex project will be the new technologies of milk processing. They will help to solve the import-dependence problem in the production of baby formula for the most sensitive group — children up to 6 months”, — says Irina Donnik, the Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Federal Research Centre “Fundamentals of Biotechnology” of the Russian Academy of Sciences was organizing communication between business and federal authorities. The business side was represented by the Council for Priority Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation, headed by Irina Donnik, the Vice President of the RAS.

“The project shows how industry initiatives in biotechnology can and should be implemented. The synergy of an integrated approach, State support, full production cycle, modern technologies and an engagement of the scientific community produces effective results and creates a full chain of domestic products production. It is important for our Center, that our employees helped to get the project to the approval stage. Moreover, we were the part of the large scientific team assembled for its realization”, — says Alexei Fedorov, Director of The Federal Research Centre “Fundamentals of Biotechnology” of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
