The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is pleased to announce the launch of new Science Partner Journal, Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research (OLAR), published in affiliation with Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai).
OLAR’s mission is to serve the scientific community and promote technological innovation in Earth system sciences. The journal provides an international platform for researchers engaged in marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric studies and the interactions among them. The journal welcomes relevant fundamental research in physics, chemistry, biology, and geology, and also emerging applied research in ocean observation, environment protection, and resources utilization. Manuscripts featuring cutting-edge science, innovative technology, and interdisciplinary studies within the journal’s scope are particularly welcome. Categories of manuscripts include Research Articles, Review Articles, Editorials, and News & Views.
Dr. Dake Chen of Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai) and Dr. Robert W. Howarth of Cornell University will serve as Editors-in-Chief. OLAR is currently open for submission and will publish under a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY).
OLAR Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Dake Chen, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized that “OLAR will provide a unique, interdisciplinary platform for scholars and researchers to showcase and disseminate their discoveries and innovations in a timely fashion, with a focus on the rapidly evolving Earth system science in general, and on the ocean, land, and atmosphere interaction in particular. We are excited to launch OLAR with the support of AAAS, and we believe that the new journal will play an instrumental role in promoting academic communication and collaboration across the relevant fields of science and technology, and in advancing our understanding of the Earth’s changing climate and ecosystems.”
“The oceans are central to global change, absorbing the vast majority of the heating of the planet to date as well as one quarter of the carbon dioxide released from burning fossil fuels. Further, large areas of the coastal oceans have been degraded from nutrient pollution from land runoff, and climate change is aggravating this in at least some regions. Understanding the interactions between the ocean and atmosphere and between land and the oceans is critical to better understanding these consequences and how they may change in the future,” said Professor Robert W. Howarth, Editor-in-Chief of OLAR, “OLAR will provide focus on these interactions of ocean-land-atmosphere, helping to sharpen our understanding of these critical processes. The support from AAAS will help ensure the success of the journal.”
“Our team is looking forward to the collaboration with Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai) to launch this new Science Partner Journal”, said Bill Moran, Publisher of the Science family of journals at AAAS. “The scope of OLAR is of great importance and we are excited to be a part of its mission to advance, promote, and innovate the field of ocean-related sciences, particularly regarding Earth’s ecosystem and climate.”
New titles participating in the Science Partner Journal program will launch on a regular basis and participation in the program is kept to English-language publications. AAAS is actively seeking new partners across scientific disciplines. Organizations participating in the Science Partner Journal program will be editorially independent and responsible for the content published in each journal. Partner organizations are responsible for establishing editorial boards committed to best practices in peer review and author service. For more information about the Science Partner Journal program, please visit the Science Partner Journal homepage at: spj.sciencemag.org.
