In response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the University of Tokyo has launched an emergency relief program to host students and researchers affected by the ensuing humanitarian crisis, who have lost a safe place to pursue their education and research. In solidarity with efforts around the world, UTokyo is joining the drive to provide support to those affected in academia, in its standing as an international university in Japan.
The university has launched a webpage for its Emergency Relief Program for Scholars and Students at Risk that lists current and updated information on educational and research programs at its faculties, graduate schools and institutes, which are accepting eligible applicants.
UTokyo is also providing financial support to cover travel, living and other expenses, and support for housing and daily life counseling to those who join the university.
Eligible applicants are students and researchers (including part time) of any nationality who are unable to secure a safe place to study or conduct research due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
The university has also set up the Emergency Relief Fund for Scholars and Students at Risk to collect donations to support its initiative.
“The mission of the University of Tokyo is to create a space for intellectual pursuit that is open to the world and free from discrimination, for the future generation of Japan and the world,” President Teruo Fujii said in a statement. “There are many students and researchers in Ukraine and neighboring countries who are unable to continue their education and research. These people are now facing a difficult situation and the University of Tokyo has been urgently considering how to provide humanitarian assistance to them. We are pleased to announce the launch of our special program to accept these students and researchers, to support their education and research.”
