Ecological scientists, educators and practitioners from around the world will be gathering in Montreal, Quebec, this August for the 107th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America. Thousands of attendees are expected to gather to present cutting-edge research at the Montréal Convention Centre (Palais des congrès de Montréal), August 14-19, 2022.
This year's joint meeting combines the resources and interests of both the Ecological Society of America and the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution.

Meeting plenaries and symposia will explore the meeting theme “A Change Is Gonna Come.” We are living in an era of global environmental, cultural, and evolutionary change, and the societal relevance of the ecological sciences continues to grow. Ecologists are busy anticipating future changes, imagining how alternative histories could have created different present-day conditions and determining what adjustments are required now to foster desired future outcomes. Ecologists are also dismantling harmful legacies, expanding knowledge systems and committing to restorative practices. A sustainable path forward for the discipline of ecology must be a collective enterprise built on principles that broaden participation, promote equity and diversify metrics of impact.
Opening Plenary – Sunday, August 14, 5:00-6:30 PM EST
Leroy Little Bear is a Blackfoot researcher who was born and raised on the Kainai First Nation in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Little Bear is a recognized leader and advocate for First Nations education, rights, self-governance, language and culture who has received numerous awards for his work, including the Officer Order of Canada, and the Alberta Order of Excellence. Along with his wife, Amethyst First Rider, Little Bear brought about the historic Buffalo Treaty between First Nations on both sides of the USA-Canada border in 2014.
Scientific Plenary – Monday, August 15, 8:00 – 10:00 AM EST
Gerardo Ceballos, a professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, proposed Mexico’s first endangered species act and has tirelessly advocated for better management of Mexican protected areas. Dr. Ceballos has also conducted pioneering research synthesizing global patterns of mammal distribution and conservation, and evaluating current extinction rates.
New Phytologist Foundation Keynote – Monday, August 15, 10:30-11:30 AM EST
Etienne Laliberté is a plant ecologist at Université de Montréal, the Principal Investigator of the Canadian Airborne Biodiversity Observatory and co-director of Québec’s Center for Biodiversity Science (QCBS), a network of 105 researchers and over 800 students across Québec. His research seeks to explain which plants grow where, and why, and how vegetation adapts to environmental changes.
Scientific Interfaces – Tuesday, August 16, 12:15 -1:15 PM EST
Alexa Sutton Lawrence leads the Ocean Conservancy in ocean justice work as the organization’s Vice President of Conservation, Justice & Equity. Dr. Sutton Lawrence has devoted her career to bridging biodiversity conservation with environmental justice, with a focus on working with and within Indigenous, African-American and Afro-Indigenous communities. She is also the founder and principal managing partner at social innovation start-up Kedge Consulting, where she provides environmental strategy and equity consulting services to corporate and nonprofit clients in North America and Europe.
Recent Advances Lecture
Somayeh Dodge is an assistant professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she runs the MOVE Research Lab in the Department of Geography. Dr. Dodge’s research focuses on developing data-driven analytics, modeling approaches and visualization techniques to study animal movement and human mobility.
CSEE Public Plenary
Lenore Fahrig is a Chancellor’s Professor of Biology at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Fahrig studies the effects of roads and traffic, habitat loss and agriculture on biodiversity. A study in 2019 ranked her impact in the top 0.01% of all 7 million scientists worldwide.
MacArthur Lecture
Jonathan Levine is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University. His research emphasizes plant migration and invasion, how communities respond to climate change and the factors that maintain species coexistence.
ESA Policy on Press Credentials
The ESA Press Office provides a virtual or in person complimentary press registration to public information officers and institutional press officers, professional journalists representing media organizations, freelance journalists, photographers, videographers, bloggers, podcasters, authors, filmmakers, institutional science communicators and student journalists, for the express purpose of gathering news and information to produce media coverage of ESA meetings.
Public information officers and institutional press officers who cannot attend, but would like to promote presenters from their institutions, are welcome to prearrange distribution of press releases and other author materials on the meeting website. Press officers may request copies of all abstracts related to their institution.
Representatives of publishing houses, the business side of news media, political action committees or similar, and for-profit corporations, will not be accredited as press and will not be eligible for complimentary press registration. Editors of journals or other publications who do not report for or edit their outlet’s news section will also not be accredited as press and are not eligible for complimentary press registration.
Press registrants receive, at no charge, access to all scientific sessions. Some events, including but not limited to invitation-only events and communications workshops, are not open to press attendees.
Scientists who will be presenting at the meeting and who are also reporting from the meeting for a recognized media outlet may also be issued press credentials at the discretion of the ESA Press Office. Anyone who presents at the meeting must also register for the meeting and pay the appropriate fee as a presenter. These registrants should first register as press and indicate that they are also a presenter on their press registration form. These registrants should not register as a presenter until after being contacted by a member of the ESA Press Office who will provide additional information for registering as a presenter.
Press room access is issued at the discretion of the ESA Press Office and is non-transferable. All registrants must provide credentials regardless of whether they have received press registration for past ESA meetings. Virtual Program
A limited virtual program will be available and will include recordings of plenary sessions, a limited selection of presentation slides and audio and a Q&A platform to allow for on-demand interaction with presenters. All uploaded presentations will be available starting after the corresponding in-person presentation is delivered. Press attendees who will only be able to attend virtually may contact the ESA Press Office to obtain virtual program access.
Press Room
Pre-registered press may pick up their credentials in the press room and enjoy coffee, tea, internet access, a printer, telephones, and an interview area. Journalists may also register on site in the Press Room.
