European Conference of Science Journalists 2022: Fully loaded and ready for launch

Meeting Announcement

European Conference of Science Journalism (ECSJ)

There are only days to go until the European Conference of Science Journalism 2022 starts on 10 July, with the conference on Tuesday 12 July 2022, the largest gathering of science reporters and editors in Europe.

The programme is now completed; packed with a rich selection of sessions, excursions and social events.

And it is not too late to book your place: the registration is still open!

The ECSJ2022 starts with two days of excursions to scientific hot spots all over the Netherlands, on 10 and 11 July.

Then, on 12 July, we are all back in Leiden for the ECSJ conference themed: 'Investigating Science'.

Our keynote speaker is Elizabeth Bik, world renowned investigator of scientific misconduct.

All sessions have been confirmed.

We have sessions on the how and why of hypes in science news, on the research reproducibility crisis, on inclusivity in science and on recognising hoaxes and fake news.

Also, a special workshop by Bellingcat instructors will show you how to use online sources to uncover what (some) authorities don’t want you to know.

Two sessions will address the issue of science journalism becoming personal: one about activist climate reporting, and one about reporting about the corona crisis.

We started organising the ECSJ-event early this year, factoring in that our programme should also engage with unexpected developments in science and society in 2022. And then Russia invaded Ukraine.

Science journalists have asked themselves what and how they could help. Some used their knowledge to distinguish the truth amongst the war propaganda and disinformation. So we are proud to have at ECSJ a member of the Meduza.io team, who will show how they used chronolocation based on astronomy to identify murders of civilians in Bucha by Russian forces.

And for those who want more on all things science and communication, they can also register for media passes at ESOF2022 event that starts on the 13 July after ECSJ ends.

If you have not registered yet for the ECSJ-event: you have until 26 june 23:59 CET, so do it now!

ECSJ will culminate in the evening of 12 July with a grand reception and awards ceremony in the historic courtyard of science museum Boerhave.

During this reception the EFSJ will present the winner of the European Science Journalist of the Year Award and laureates who will receive its Climate Investigation Grant.
