SANTA ROSA, CA (June 29, 2022) — New research finds that a novel partnered meditation practice involving genital touch produces two distinct and equally beneficial types of experience for both participants in this structured practice.

In a newly unveiled study, 93 practitioners of Orgasmic Meditation, or “OM,” were monitored in real time during an actual OM session through the use of biometric equipment. When their timed OM session was over, each participant completed psychological questionnaires devised to assess their experience of their just-finished OM session.

OM is a partnered physical practice between two participants that involves one participant stimulating the clitoris of a receiving partner in a prescribed, controlled setting for 15 minutes. The process follows a standard set of procedures, and is designed to be fully replicated with each timed session.

Using biometric measurements, researchers found that Skin Conductance Response (SCR), a measure of physiological arousal, either increased or decreased during each OM session, suggesting that practitioners’ experiences may vary.

For example, tracked measurements of decreasing skin resistance may correlate with a more relaxing OM experience, while increased skin resistance conversely may show signs of high arousal or mystical experiences in certain OM practitioners. These results are supported by an earlier OM study evaluating mystical experiencesamong 780 OM practitioners.

The study’s authors note that OM may provide multiple but varied benefits to practitioners. While decreasing skin resistance was reliably associated with self-reports of reduced anger and anxiety, increased skin resistance was associated with reports of improved partner closeness and subjective sexual arousal.

Strikingly, regardless of SCR patterns observed through the biometric measures deployed during this latest study, when study participants completed their follow-on psychological questionnaire, some 90 percent of respondents rated their feelings of happiness as a  “4”  or “5”  on a scale of one-to-five, with five being the highest experiential rating.

“The general idea that direct genital stimulation is not only arousing — it can have multiple functions depending on the mindset of the individual,” says Dr. Nicole Prause, Founder of the Liberos sexual psychophysiology lab, and co-author of this paper.
