Responding to the European Commission’s proposal for updated regulations on blood, tissues and cells (BTC) including for assisted reproduction, Cristina Magli, chair of ESHRE’S EU affairs committee, said Friday 22 July:

“This long-awaited proposal has the potential to provide significant improvements for people requiring medically assisted reproduction (MAR).

“It is good to see that the Commission has taken on board many of ESHRE’s recommendations. These include a stronger emphasis on donor and offspring protection, and an expansion of mandatory data collection requirements.

“ESHRE is also pleased that the terminology used to describe MAR treatments has been adjusted. The language now reflects the reality and is inclusive of same-sex couples.

“The proposal gives expert bodies* a more significant role which underlines the importance of strong links between these organisations and scientific societies like ESHRE. Cooperation and collaboration are essential for developing guidance on BTC therapies that is evidence-based and relevant to specific treatment areas.

“The priority now for ESHRE is to analyse the proposal in-depth and engage with the Parliament and Council. The Society’s goal is to ensure that the legislation brings the maximum benefit to MAR patients, donors and children, and to the professionals who provide treatments.”
