Thursday, October 13, 2022 (San Mateo, California) – Knowable Magazine, from nonprofit science publisher Annual Reviews, can now be read in Spanish as well as English with the launch today (October 13, 2022) of Knowable en español. The new Spanish edition of the award-winning magazine makes a range of scientific articles freely available to Spanish-speaking readers — with topics ranging from agriculture to high-energy physics; biochemistry to water security; the origins of the universe to psychology.

Through in-depth articles, interviews and opinion pieces, Knowable Magazine presents research and insights from scholarly specialists and translates them into accessible formats for a broader audience.

Many of the features are inspired by articles published in Annual Reviews — a collection of 51 journals that capture current understanding of a scientific topic as well as mapping out the future of research in biomedicine, life sciences, physical sciences and social sciences.

Knowable en español features original reporting, as well as translated stories from Knowable Magazine, which celebrates its fifth anniversary later this month. The content is not only free to read, but also free to republish under a CC BY-ND copyright license. All media outlets can have access to the high-quality, fact-checked science journalism.

Knowable Magazine is highly respected for its range of story lines. Its debut line-up of articles in Spanish includes: the Science of people’s habits, The origins of glass, Defining prediabetes, Using zinc to fight infections and The diets of people in ancient civilizations

“Spanish is a language spoken by almost 600 million people in the world today, whether as a native, second or foreign language and is the native language in more countries than English. By 2060, the United States will be the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico,” says Richard Gallagher, Publisher of Knowable Magazine and President and Editor-In-Chief of Annual Reviews.

“With its special focus on reliable, well-reported science journalism in Spanish, Knowable en español allows us to serve this growing audience in a new way, offering unbiased and fact-based information on a wide array of topics of great interest such as the Covid pandemic, climate change and other evolving areas of research.”

Guiding Knowable Magazine in this effort is Debbie Ponchner, who was named editor of Knowable en español earlier this year and is playing a key role in shaping the site and its content. An award-winning journalist, Ponchner previously served as Spanish-language editor of Scientific American en español, and as managing editor of La Nación, the newspaper of record in Costa Rica.

“Debbie brings years of experience to this new venture, as well as connections to working journalists in Latin America and knowledge of the region’s research enterprise,” says Knowable Magazine Editor-In-Chief Eva Emerson. “It’s been a huge advantage having someone of Debbie’s caliber on board from the beginning.”

Knowable en español already features over 30 translated articles from Knowable Magazine in English and original articles by science writers from Latin America, with content added every week.

Knowable en español is funded by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and by Annual Reviews.
