UTICA, NY — The Masonic Medical Research Institute (MMRI) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Summer Fellowship. Fellows must be undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at an accredited university, with an interest in science or medicine. For ten weeks, from May through July, ten fellows are paired with scientists at the MMRI, in an intensive working and mentorship experience at one of the preeminent research institutes in the USA.
Fellows work on cutting-edge scientific research studies in an established investigator’s laboratory at the MMRI. Research programs at the MMRI include projects in cardiovascular, neurocognitive, and autoimmunity diseases, as well as in cancer and gastrointestinal disease. The technology and state-of-the-art tools available at the MMRI are sophisticated, and include inducible pluripotent stem cells, CRISPR technology, nanoparticle delivery platforms, molecular imaging, and genetic sequencing.
At the conclusion of each summer program, Fellows present their science projects to a lay audience, which includes local dignitaries, parents, clinicians, and scientists from the community. In addition, Fellows enjoy a variety of valuable experiences, both in and out of the laboratory, and they can add their prestigious accolades to their portfolio. The greater than 50-year history of this program together with the success of prior year Fellows in STEM-based research or clinical fields, are a testament to the success of this program. Many of our Summer Fellow alumni have even pursued continuing their studies at the MMRI post-graduation.
The MMRI Summer Fellowship is a scholarship-based program funded by MMRI donors, and it is free to apply. The MMRI values inclusion and diversity, and people from communities underrepresented in science are strongly encouraged to apply.
