Study shows sex-specific genes associated with depression in UK Biobank

Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore

A study by the A*STAR Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences and McGill University found that the genetic vulnerabilities for depression differ between males and females. Researchers performed a sex-stratified genome-wide association analysis for broad depression using the UK Biobank cohort and revealed how antidepressant treatments appeared to target different biological processes in males and females. Thus, tailored therapeutic treatments that consider sex differences will bring better outcomes for patients suffering from depression.
