The Future Science Awards Foundation, together with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Tencent Foundation, co-organised the “Future Science Prize Laureates’ Documentary Screening” at HKU Rayson Huang Theatre on 10 June. The Screening included documentaries of three laureates of the “Future Science Prize”, namely Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, 2021 The Life Science Prize Laureate and Professor in Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of HKU, Professor Yang Xue-ming, 2022 The Physical Science Prize Laureate and Vice President of Southern University of Science and Technology and Professor Mok Ngai-ming, 2022 The Mathematics and Computer Science Prize Laureate and Chair Professor of Mathematics of HKU. The documentaries showcased their growth and struggles for their dreams as well as their outstanding achievements in their respective academic fields.

Professor Mok Ngai-ming, last year’s laureate of the Prize and Chair of Mathematics of HKU, attended the Screening and engaged in discussions to exchange views with hundreds of local and Greater Bay Area students, inspiring their passion for science, promoting the spirit of science and encouraging the younger generation to embark their journeys as scientists.

Professor Mok Ngai-ming said: “Do not think you cannot acquire advanced knowledge at your secondary school stage. When I was a secondary school student, I often self-studied advanced mathematics during my spare time and made use of local resources, such as the library in my secondary school and Hong Kong City Hall, where I often visited. Through studying at the library, I learned the form of mathematical thinking and found out what problems others were discussing, which was of great help to me in becoming a mathematician. Being recognised by the Future Science Prize today is of great significance to me.”

Gao, a tenth-grade student from Mainland, said: “Hong Kong is an international metropolis. Today, by attending the Screening, I am deeply impressed by the international atmosphere and excellent academic environment at HKU and genuinely wish to study here”

The Future Science Prize Week will be co-organised by The Future Science Awards Foundation and The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in Hong Kong for the first time in October this year. In line with this world-class annual scientific event, the organiser will hold a series of events in Hong Kong, including an Award Ceremony, to build a global platform for scientific exchange, creating a scientific atmosphere and injecting impetus into Hong Kong’s science and innovation development.

"Future Science Prize" has been recognised by "Nature", an international science journal, as "China's Nobel Prize" and comprises three major prizes, namely “The Life Science Prize”, “The Physical Science Prize” and “The Mathematics and Computer Science Prize”, which are all evaluated by a professional scientific committee of 23 outstanding local and international scientists who adhere to the principles of justice, fairness, and integrity to maintain the independence during the judging process.
