Geological Society of America Announces 2023–2024 Officers and Councilors

Boulder, Colo., USA: Christopher (Chuck) M. Bailey, College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, takes over the role of president of The Geological Society of America as of 1 July 2023. The incoming president-elect is Carmala N. Garzione, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.

Rounding out the new executive committee are immediate past president Mark G. Little, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and treasurer Brian G. Katz, environmental consultant.

GSA’s new president, Chuck Bailey, is a structural geologist and educator, and brings a robust record of service to the Society, as well as proven leadership skills to this role.

About GSA, Bailey says, “GSA is fabulous at doing science, and I think we can ramp up the public-facing part of that. I’m looking forward to working on public science from the point of view of GSA communications as well as in our publications, things that can be put out there that are digestible by a large audience. I’m excited about helping to internationalize GSA in the form of new meetings in new places, and engaging with people the Society has had only minimal opportunity to interact with. I will be a voice for inclusivity in geoscience, so that students at their very first meeting feel like they are welcome at GSA, and then people who have had a long and productive career also want to make the trip to attend the Connects meeting.”

Bailey will deliver his presidential address during GSA’s Connects 2023 meeting on Sunday, 15 October, Noon–1:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His talk is titled, “Geoscience at the Confluence.” The event will be open to all meeting attendees, and members of the media are invited.

Along with confirmation of ballot results at its May meeting, GSA Council approved new members and Fellows, the GSA medalists and awardees, the FY24 budgets, and its priorities for the coming year and beyond.

Newly elected Councilors serving four-year terms from 1 July 2023–30 June 2027 are:
Craig H. Jones, University of Colorado;
Patricia Persaud, Louisiana State University; and
Nicholas P. Lang (Divisions Liaison), NASA Planetary Science Division/Mercyhurst University.

The new Student Advisory Council Chair is Miguel Valencia, Florida International University.

GSA Executive Director and CEO Melanie Brandt welcomed the new Officers and Councilors, saying, "I am thrilled to work with this remarkable and devoted team of GSA officers, and extend a warm welcome to our newly appointed Councilors. I am confident their involvement and expertise will enrich the GSA Council."

The Geological Society of America (GSA) (https://www.geosociety.org) unites a diverse community of geoscientists in a common purpose to study the mysteries of our planet (and beyond) and share scientific findings. Members and friends around the world, from academia, government, and industry, participate in GSA meetings, publications, and programs at all career levels, to foster professional excellence. GSA values and supports inclusion through cooperative research, public dialogue on earth issues, science education, and the application of geoscience in the service of humankind.
