Marine ammonia-oxidizing archaea link ocean nitrogen cycling to nitrous oxide emissions in a changing climate
Science China PressA review published in SCIENCE CHINA Earth Sciences synthesizes current knowledge of nitrous oxide (N2O) production by marine planktonic ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), an important microbial group involved in ocean nitrification. The authors summarize the potential metabolic pathways of AOA-derived N2O and examine how environmental factors including oxygen, temperature, pH, substrate availability, and organic carbon regulate this process. The review highlights the need to understand multifactorial effects of ocean warming, acidification, and deoxygenation to better predict marine N2O emissions under future climate change.

Enhancing interfacial stability of high-voltage LiCoO2 via a zeolite front-face with confined channels for desolvation
Science China PressLithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2, LCO) stands as one of the most representative cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. The improvement in energy density of LiCoO2 is essentially achieved by increasing the charge cut-off voltage. However, under high-voltage conditions, the electrolyte solvent molecules undergo severe oxidative decomposition at the cathode interface. Moreover, a series of issues including transition metal dissolution, oxygen release, and deteriorated thermal stability, have become bottlenecks that severely restrict its practical application.
To address this challenge, Prof. Yang Sun (Sun Yat-sen University), Associate Researcher Maolin Yang (Xiamen University), Professors Qiaobao Zhang (Xiamen University), Yu Qiao (Xiamen University), and Academician Shi-gang Sun (Xiamen University) have proposed a novel strategy to stabilize high-voltage LiCoO2 cathodes by coating them with a conformal zeolite layer using a scalable high-speed solid-phase mechanofusion technique. The sub-nano channels of zeolite enable complete Li+ desolvation, creating a locally supersaturated electrolyte that suppresses solvent decomposition. The Zeolite@LCO cathode achieves ~83% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 4.8 V and stable operation at 5.0 V, with significantly enhanced thermal safety. This work provides a translatable paradigm for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. This work was recently published online in Science Bulletin.

NISAR observations of how magma moved beneath Ethiopia’s volcanoes
KeAi Communications Co., Ltd.A study in Geodesy and Geodynamics used satellite radar to examine the November 2025 Hayli Gubbi eruption in Ethiopia’s Afar Depression. Researchers combined NISAR’s left-looking radar with Sentinel-1’s right-looking observations to reconstruct three-dimensional ground movement. Although the eruption occurred at Hayli Gubbi, the strongest deformation was detected at Erta Ale, where the summit crater partially collapsed and the ground sank inward. Modeling linked this to two shallow dikes beneath Erta Ale, both about 1 km deep. The event also reactivated nine nearby faults. Compared with a larger eruption earlier in 2025, the November event was more localized and relied mainly on shallow magma storage.

Clinical burden and health-related quality of life in Chinese patients under 16 with mucopolysaccharidosis type II
KeAi Communications Co., Ltd.This study assessed the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of Chinese patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) and explored key factors associated with HRQoL. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in February 2023 through the China Rare Disease Alliance Cloud Service Platform, in which patients with MPS II and their family members completed an online questionnaire collecting information on Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Version 4.0 scores, sociodemographic characteristics, and clinical features. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize patient characteristics and HRQoL levels, and multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors influencing HRQoL. Data were obtained from 129 individuals across 22 regions in China, the majority of whom were boys (98%), with a mean age of 8.7 years. Initial symptoms appeared at approximately 2.5 years of age, yet diagnosis was often delayed by more than one year, and over half of the children (57%) had previously received an incorrect diagnosis. On average, nearly ten body systems were affected. Overall HRQoL was low, with a mean score of 30.08 (standard deviation (SD) = 19.51). Domain-specific scores were 30.98 for daily activities, 43.18 for emotional well-being, 24.73 for social functioning, and 20.89 for school participation, indicating substantial difficulties in performing routine tasks. Multiple linear regression (adjusted R2 = 0.381) showed that HRQoL significantly declined with increasing age (β = −2.000, P = 0.003) and the presence of neurological or cognitive impairments (β = −12.798, P < 0.001), whereas school attendance was a strong positive predictor of higher HRQoL (β = 16.330, P < 0.001). Overall, Chinese patients with MPS II demonstrated markedly reduced HRQoL, particularly in cognitive and daily functioning domains, underscoring the need for improved clinical management and supportive strategies to enhance their well-being.
