Medication that protects brain tissue linked to improved stroke survival

For the first time, a novel neuroprotectant medication that may safeguard the brain from tissue damage has been linked to reduced death and disability among people diagnosed with stroke when added to standard treatment to restore blood flow.
The rate of death was four times lower among people who received the neuroprotectant medication, ApTOLL, compared to those receiving a placebo in a multi-nation study.

Irregular heart rhythms detected in 1 in 5 stroke survivors, increasing risk of new stroke

People who survive a stroke when atherosclerosis leads to a blood clot in the brain are not routinely monitored for irregular heart rhythms, which may lead to another stroke, yet 1 in 5 stroke survivors were found to experience irregular heart rhythms — known as atrial fibrillation — during cardiac monitoring for three years after a stroke. Insertable cardiac monitors frequently detected episodes of abnormal heart rhythms lasting more than 10 minutes, a significant risk for stroke, in many study participants.

Two cardiovascular medicines were well-tolerated for small vessel stroke

No standard medical therapy exists for a stroke occurring in a small vessel in the deep areas of the brain — called a lacunar stroke. A preliminary study of two common cardiovascular medications, cilostazol and isosorbide mononitrate, suggests these two medications were safe and well-tolerated by adults who have experienced small vessel stroke, when taken alone or together.
A larger, more extensive study is planned to examine the effectiveness of the medications in treating the complications of small vessel stroke.

Black and Hispanic people in U.S. less likely to get treatment for stroke complications
