Media Briefings

AAAS will host three media briefings on timely topics on Thursday, March 2. Below, find briefing descriptions, speakers and room numbers (links to access briefings virtually to be available soon), or view speaker biographies, photos and resources.

Competition and Research Security Defining U.S.-China Relations (2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Room 146A, virtual access: https://virtual.aaas.org/live/panels/media_1). There is a growing bipartisan and cross-sector concern in the United States: Vulnerabilities in our research and innovation ecosystems in comparison to select foreign nations. On the heels of the recently created “Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party” in Congress, AAAS will host a media briefing featuring experts who will dive into the U.S.-China relationship around competitiveness, research security and research innovation. Speakers include Stewart Barber, director of government affairs at Semiconductor Industry Association; Rebecca Keiser, chief of research security strategy and policy at the National Science Foundation; Bill Colglazier, editor-in-chief of Science & Diplomacy at AAAS; and Toby Smith, vice president for policy at the Association for American Universities.

A New National Effort to Mitigate Mis- and Disinformation in Health Care (3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Room 146C, virtual access: https://virtual.aaas.org/live/panels/media_2). Medical misinformation and disinformation in the United States has reached a tipping point. Mistrust in messengers and sources of accurate information about health care, public health and science-based health guidance are undermining the benefits of medical advances for our society. That mistrust can be deadly, as we have seen from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic response and the ripple effects of disinformation on health care legislation. Addressing this crisis will take unprecedented coordination among the government, the health care industry, non-profits, providers and citizens. During this panel, leading experts in business and health care will unveil a new coordinated effort to increase trust in health care, break down information silos, increase effective means of communication, and build the relationships necessary to support the medical care decisions and behaviors of patients, families and communities. Speakers include Helen Burstin, CEO, Council of Medical Specialty Societies; Randall Rutta, CEO, National Health Council; Mary Woolley, President and CEO, Research!America; Julie Gerberding, CEO, Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. Moderated by Shirley Malcom, director of SEA Change and senior advisor, AAAS.

Implications of ChatGPT and Generative AI on the Scientific Enterprise (4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Room 146A, virtual access: https://virtual.aaas.org/live/panels/media_3). Panelists will address code of conduct issues, benefits and concerns around these technologies, and implications for scientific research and publishing. Speakers include Elham Tabassi, chief of staff in the Information Technology Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology; Francesca Rossi, IBM Fellow, AI Ethics Global Leader, and president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence; Holden Thorp, editor-in-chief of the Science family of journals; Gordon Crovitz, co-CEO and co-editor-in-chief of NewsGuard; and Theresa Harris, director of the AAAS Center for Scientific Responsibility and Justice.
