You're Earning Coverage But Are You Earning Trust?
Panelists Ruth Francis, Euan McKay, and Dominique Brossard joined us on our webinar follow-up to the 2018 EurekAlert! PIO Seminar. Experts discuss what, besides media relations, PIOs can do to build the public’s trust in science. We reviewed the latest research on communication and trust, learned what University of Tokyo did to rebuild trust in scientists after the Fukushima disaster, how to use social media to listen to your audience, and the difference between publicity and engagement.

Dominique Brossard | @brossardd
Professor and Chair, Department of Life Sciences Communication, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dominique Brossard is professor and chair in the Department of Life Sciences Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her teaching responsibilities include courses in strategic communication theory and research, with a focus on science and risk communication. Dominique's research agenda focuses on the intersection between science, media and policy with the Science, Media and the Public research group, which she co-directs. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a former board member of the International Network of Public Communication of Science and Technology, Dominique is an internationally known expert in public opinion dynamics related to controversial scientific issues. She is particularly interested in understanding the role of values in shaping public attitudes and using cross-cultural analysis to understand these processes. She has published numerous research articles in outlets such as Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Science Communication, the International Journal of Public Opinion, and Public Understanding of Science, and has been an expert panelist for the National Academy of Sciences on various occasions. Dominique has a varied professional background that includes experience in the lab and in the corporate world. Notably, she spent five years at Accenture in its Change Management Services Division. She was also the communication coordinator for the Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II, a position that combined public relations with marketing communication and strategic communication. She earned her M.S. in plant biotechnology from the Ecole Nationale d'Agronomie de Toulouse and her M.P.S and Ph.D. in communication from Cornell University.

Ruth Francis has vast experience in the communications and policy arena; from running highly successful teams at Nature, Springer, BioMed Central and F1000, to coordinating and speaking on panels on subjects including science communication and evidence based policy making. She has written for Nature, and appeared on the Guardian Science podcast.
Euan McKay | @euanmckay
Project Assistant Professor/Press Officer, University of Tokyo
Euan McKay is Project Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo, where he works on the university's communications strategy, supports the university president dealing with foreign media and at English-language events, and occasionally teaches on East Asian history and diversity-related topics. He is currently working on implementing a new news site and editorial structure to support the university's strategic communications and to boost the university's international presence. He has seven years' experience working in science communications at the University of Tokyo. Originally from South Africa and the UK, he has lived in Japan for 18 years. His undergraduate study was in Natural Sciences in the UK, after which he switched to international relations and history in Japan.

Nicholas St. Fleur is a science reporter for the New York Times who writes about archaeology, paleontology, space and other types of interesting research, regularly for the desk's Trilobites column. He joined the New York Times in 2015. Before that, he was an assistant editor at The Atlantic covering science, health and technology. He has also worked for Science Magazine, NPR and Scientific American. Nick graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz Science Communication Program and completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell University, where he studied biology.

Brian Lin is director of editorial content strategy at EurekAlert!, the non-profit news service that serves more than 14,500 reporters, 5,000 public information officers, and a growing public audience.
Brian was a press officer on the science and health beats at the University of British Columbia in Canada from 2001-2014. He led the design of UBC's media training curriculum and trained more than 500 faculty and students through lectures, workshops, and coaching. Since joining AAAS, he has led PIO workshops in China, Japan, Singapore, the US and UK. Brian holds a Master of Journalism degree from UBC and a Bachelor of Arts from National Taiwan University.
