Behind the model: Science inspired by Lego blocks

Walt Akers, chief systems engineer for experimental nuclear physics at Jefferson Lab was tasked with creating a 3D-printed model of a section of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a next-generation particle accelerator being built at the DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory in partnership with Jefferson Lab. He took his inspiration from toy building blocks.

Delay and pay: Tipping point costs quadruple after waiting

The cost of reversing the effects of climate change—restoring melted polar sea ice, for example—quickly climbs nearly fourfold soon after a tipping point is crossed, according to new work publishing in the journal npj Climate and Atmospheric Science on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Much work has been done to explore the environmental costs tied to climate change. But this new study marks the first time researchers have quantified the costs of controlling tipping points before and after they unfold.

A career of chasing particle beams

Alex Bogacz, a senior scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility since 1997, has spent his career in accelerator physics solving problems. From studying complex particle beam dynamics in particle accelerators to designing next-generation machines, his almost four decades of work have recently been recognized by his peers by being named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in October 2024.

24s: A businesslike name for a ‘high-performing machine’

The latest addition to the computational arsenal of Jefferson Lab is an extraordinary machine with the admittedly ordinary name of “24s.” The 24s cluster at Jefferson Lab will work to unlock the mysteries of the nucleus of the atom. It was funded by the Nuclear and Particle Physics LQCD Computing Initiative of DOE’s Office of Nuclear Physics.

New results published in Physical Review Letters describe a first-time glimpse of the internal structure of the neutron thanks to the development of a special, 10-years-in-the-making detector installed in Experimental Hall B at Jefferson Lab.

A nearby supernova could end the search for dark matter

Axions are the most likely candidate for enigmatic dark matter that dominates the universe. Astrophysicists are searching for evidence of high-mass axions produced during supernovae. UC Berkeley and Berkeley Lab scientists propose that a quick way to find these axions is to look for a gamma ray burst coincident with a neutrino burst from a nearby core collapse supernova. But we need a fleet of gamma ray telescopes to insure we capture these rare events.

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is collaborating with a technology transfer partner Sydor Technologies, which has been awarded a $1.15 million Phase-II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) for their project “Plasma-Electrode Pockels Cells for Inertial Fusion Facilities.”

How protective antibodies get in malaria’s way

In work published today in Nature, researchers’ structural insights help reveal weak spot in malaria’s plan of attack which could help guide vaccine design. Contributors hailed from Fred Hutch, the Scripps Research Institute, the University of Copenhagen and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, as well as the Tanga Research Centre, the Infectious Disease Research Collaboration in Uganda, and the University of California, San Francisco.
