California's policies can significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions through 2030

A new model of the impact of California's existing and proposed policies on its greenhouse gas reduction goals suggests that the state is on track to meet 2020 goals, and could achieve greater emission reductions by 2030, but the state will need to do more to reach its 2050 climate goals.

Pinpointing the magnetic moments of nuclear matter

Using supercomputing resources at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center at Berkeley Lab, a team of nuclear physicists has demonstrated for the first time the ability of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- a fundamental theory in particle physics -- to calculate the magnetic structure of some of the lightest nuclei. Their findings are part of an ongoing effort to further our understanding of the universe.

Ultra-realistic radiation detection training without using radioactive materials

Using this process the researchers have built nanoribbons that have enhanced properties -- such as position-dependent, tunable bandgaps -- that are potentially very useful for next-generation electronic circuitry.

Small volcanic eruptions partly explain 'warming hiatus'

Scientists have long known that volcanoes cool the atmosphere because of the sulfur dioxide that is expelled during eruptions. Droplets of sulfuric acid that form when the gas combines with oxygen in the upper atmosphere can persist for many months, reflecting sunlight away from Earth and lowering temperatures at the surface and in the lower atmosphere.
