Upgraded IMG 2.3 Data Management System released by DOE JGI to eager user community

A powerful set of computational tools established to ease the visualization and exploration of genomes flooding the public domain is now available in IMG Version 2.3 -- the Integrated Microbial Genomes data management system hosted by the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. The content of IMG 2.3, upgraded with new microbial genomes from the Version 23 release of NCBI's™ RefSeq collection, now includes fungi, protists (eukaryotic unicellular organisms), and plant genomes.

Irrigation may not cool the globe in the future

Where broken DNA is repaired

Intricate DNA repair mechanisms in cell nuclei are constantly working to fix damaged DNA, but for mammalian cells, exactly where the repair work happens has been an unanswered question. By comparing computer models of damaged human DNA with microscopic images of radiation-induced damage in human cells, researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and their colleagues have found evidence for specific regions where broken DNA is concentrated for repair.

Berkeley Lab's ultraclean combustion technology for electricity generation

Gruber Cosmology Prize awarded to discoverers of dark energy

Bright future for nano-sized light source

A bio-friendly nanosized light source capable of emitting coherent light across the visible spectrum has been invented by researchers with the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the University of California at Berkeley. Among the many potential applications of this nano-sized light source, once the technology is refined, are single cell endoscopy and other forms of subwavelength bio-imaging, integrated circuitry for nanophotonic technology and new advanced methods of cyber cryptography.
